Best Franchise Opportunities in North Carolina

This article covers something near and dear to my heart as I personally live in North Carolina an have lived here since 2016.

North Carolina is a great state, and it offers a range of opportunities when it comes to opening up a franchise (or several). However, the journey to becoming a franchisee is not quite as straight forward as you might hope.

There are some companies that you might be interested in franchising that don’t offer it. I personally get asked about Chipotle a lot with aspiring franchisees that I work with, and I unfortunately have to tell them that’s not a possibility. Secondly, when you’ve narrowed down the list of companies that you could be interested in, you’ll need to dig through FDDs (franchise disclosure documents) to understand things like fee structures, territory rights, and various other obligations you have if you choose to go with a specific franchisor.

Let’s not forget the business needs to match your lifestyle criteria!

The list below is not a full list of the best franchise opportunities in North Carolina but a pick of some of the best contenders, including multi-unit opportunities. I’ve specifically chosen companies across a range of industries so you can understand the different options available.

When you’re to take it a step further, reach out to me or another franchise expert (here’s my philosophy when I work with franchisees), and I’ll be happy to help make sure you find the right company! You could even end up with a master franchise agreement

Crumbl Cookies

First on the list (but perhaps not right for) of the best multi-unit franchise opportunities in North Carolina is Crumbl Cookies. I personally love their product, and it has the advantage of having high margins too (unlike an alternative franchisor like Snap-On).

North Carolians may love their college basketball, but they love a sweet treat too, and that’s where Crumbl’s product comes in. Not only is it very addictive, but it’s also very Instagrammable. What I love so much about that is that the product is sold by the customers. In this era of social media and people sharing everything online, selling a product where your customers also share it online, is key.

North Carolina has a growing suburban sprawl – Cary, Huntersville, an more – and what’s more fun than families going to their favorite place with sweet treats and treating their young ones?

Opening mulit-unit locations of Crumbl Cookies around where there are tons of families is a great way to tap into people’s desire to get something sweet. Personally, I would look for locations next to a supplementary business that gets a lot fo traffic that you could tap into.

One of the challenges is definitely that the North Carolinians know their preferences (just try talking to them about barbeque and you’ll know what I mean). You’ll need to be careful in choosing the right location if you go down this route, but that’s not particularly different from most other franchises.

I personally love Crumbl’s model when it comes to multi-unit franchising, but there are definitely many options to consider.

StormGuard

North Carolina is prone to some weather, I’m not going to lie! We have the Carolina Hurricanes and then we have hurricane weather phenomenon that will come through and absolutely tear off some roofs.

That’s why the second company suggested as a good franchise opportunity is StormGuard.

North Carolina gets “100-year” floods every 10 years. However, you don’t even need to wait that long for business. With the limited lifespan of typical roofs and frequent hail storms, North Carolina is a great place to set up a roofing company.

However, what I love about this business model is also that a lot of the cost of the product is handled by insurance. A homeowner only needs to be put in front of you when they need a new roof because of a storm, and it’s an easy pick, with the bill picked up by someone else.

PJ’s Coffee

As I am personally from Europe, I take my coffee game very seriously, and I definitely think North Carolina could have some better coffee shop options.

PJ’s Coffee is a strong contender in the space among many. (When you’re ready to move forward with opening up multi-units of coffee shops, let’s get on a call).

Asheville, Greensboro, and Wilmington have cozier vibes where a PJ’s Coffee would fit right in. If you can secure a location with a lot of foot traffic, PJ’s can be a great option to consider for your franchise dreams.

Home Matters

North Carolina is a great place to retire, and while the demographic is definitely young in Raleigh, there are other places where the population is aging. New Bern and Asheville are cases of that. Aging-in-place solutions are relevant products in places where there is a significant community of older people.

You won’t even have to get on TikTok to sell the product because your customer demographic isn’t on there!

Hydrate Bar

You will see that North Carolinians are among the people in the US that take health and wellness the most seriously, and a Hydrate bar is a great option for that demographic.  Wellness is booming, and so is IV therapy.

These places are popping up all over the place, because they’re a high-end offering with great margins. If you go with this franchisor, you’ll need a location in an affluent neighborhood.

Factors to consider

North Carolina is a great place for multi-unit franchising and the list above only just scratched the surface of the options (contact me for more).

📍 Region 🏪 Best Franchise Types 🧠 Why It Works Here 🎯 Local Promo Idea
🏀 Raleigh / Durham (Triangle) IV therapy, juice bars, kids STEM, pet care, med spas Affluent tech and university population + rapid suburban growth = strong ROI for wellness, education, and lifestyle franchises “Triangle Wellness Week” — partner with yoga studios near NC State for first-month discounts
🏖️ Wilmington Mobile car wash, frozen drinks, marine retail, beach bike repair Seasonal tourist waves + off-campus student zones + growing full-time population = great for flexible/mobile models “Boardwalk Bonus Card” — offer tourist punchcards along Riverwalk with daily raffle drawings
🏡 Charlotte Suburbs (Huntersville, Concord) Drive-thru QSR, dry cleaners, personal fitness, oil change services High homeownership, big-box plaza co-tenancy, and 9-to-5 commuter traffic — ideal for convenience-first, recurring-revenue units “Commuter Club” — weekly punch card giveaways at park-and-ride zones near I-77 exits
🛠️ Winston-Salem / Greensboro HVAC, pest control, tutoring, home cleaning, senior wellness Stable blue-collar base + senior population + available labor = scalable home service territory with low startup friction “Home Ready Days” — market through churches with free assessments + branded house kits
🐗 Boone / Asheville Hiking retail, fast casual, bike shops, float spas, refill stations Tourist + student combo (Appalachian State, UNC Asheville) = works well for eco-conscious, niche brands with low buildout “App State Refill Challenge” — offer free refills to students with sustainable container use on campus

When you’re considering setting up shop in North Carolina, you’ll want to consider some factors specific to the state.

Weather risks, market saturation, and demographic growth are all important factors to consider. Wake County is a booming place where tons of people are moving. Make sure you know what that means to the franchise opportunity you’re considering.

Real estate prices are important to consider as well. Downtown Raleigh is expensive whereas Rocky Mount is not. Find a way that your franchise dreams can take advantage of that fact.
